Who We Are

Better Schools for Sarasota County is a coalition dedicated to supporting the renewal of the millage referendum that is solely dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the quality of education in our community. Voters first passed this school millage in 2002 – since then, it has made a significant impact in our schools, enriching the educational experience of tens of thousands of students over the last 22 years.

Renewing the voter approved referendum will NOT increase taxes. The funds generated through this renewal will help retain and recruit high quality teachers, promote student achievement, elevate workforce education and ensure our schools and classrooms are safe and secure.

To ensure transparency and accountability, an independent Financial Advisory Committee oversees the budget to ensure proper use of funds. They conduct annual reviews and report on expenditures.

The proposal was renewed in 2022, after first passing in 2002. Every dollar from this renewal will stay right here in Sarasota County. An independent Financial Advisory Committee watches over the allocation of funds and produces annual reports on expenditures.

What are citizens voting on?
Voters in Sarasota County will decide whether to continue the 1 mill per year ad valorem millage to retain and recruit quality teachers, provide workforce training, improve school safety and security, and upgrade classroom technology.
Voters first approved this measure in 2002. This renewal does not raise taxes.
Funds raised through this referendum renewal will stay right here in Sarasota County supporting our teachers and students – no money will be diverted to DC or Tallahassee. An independent Financial Advisory Committee watches over the money and produces annual reviews on expenditures. Funds go directly to our teachers, students and schools.

The millage renewal will invest funds towards attracting and retaining high quality education staff. These resources allow Sarasota County to offer competitive salaries along with educational support. We are competing with other counties to recruit and retain high quality teachers.
